Coaches,

I’ve been getting calls, texts, and emails all weekend and this morning concerning questions about WARM UP games today and tomorrow. I’m not the person to make official determinations, but I’m more than happy to make a phone call for all of you. I made a phone call to Brandy Belk at the UIL this morning and she is getting many calls as well. I told her, with her approval, that I would send this out to help everyone out and maybe clear everything up. She has approved this email for me to send out.

Remember this – the DISTRICT CERTIFICATION date is Midnight tomorrow, so according to UIL rules, you are still free to play regular season games (district games are regular season) until then. So, if you are finished with district play, as 98% of you are, if you haven’t gone over your regular season limit of 17 games plus 3 tournaments (20 and 2, 23 and 1, 26 and 0), then you can play a game tonight or even tomorrow night. These are not considered “Warm Up” games by the UIL! These are regular season games and are subject to the normal games per week rules. This means you can play tonight OR tomorrow night – not both – even if you are under the total number of games.

The question that has come up – “If I play a ‘warm up’ game on Monday or Tuesday, then I can’t start my playoff game/series until Friday.” This is incorrect thinking! The playoffs are a completely different entity and are an exception to the games per school week rules. You are not restricted from playing a regular season game tonight or tomorrow and then starting your playoffs on Thursday.

The “Warm Up” game scenario is for those schools who have already reached their total number of games and would play another game against a playoff team. This only applies to schools who are district champions with a BYE in the first round (only 2A and 1A now) and can be played only at the end of your school day on Friday, last day of instruction (with no loss of school time) or anytime on Saturday.

So here are a couple of examples:

Under total number of total games:

Play today – OK
Play tomorrow – OK
Play today and tomorrow – NO

Reached total number of games:
Play today – NO
Play tomorrow – NO
Play today and tomorrow – NO

Games Per Week Restriction:
Play regular game today and start playoffs Wednesday – OK
Play regular game today and start playoffs Thursday -- OK
Play regular game today and start playoffs Friday / Saturday – OK
Play regular game tomorrow and start playoffs Wednesday – OK
Play regular game tomorrow and start playoffs Thursday -- OK
Play regular game tomorrow and start playoffs Friday / Saturday – OK

Remember, the UIL is here to help answer any questions, so if you still are unclear, contact Brandy Belk at bbelk@uiltexas.org or 512-471-5883 (office). She is very helpful and responsive to all coaches!
