Softball Coaches,

Welcome back to the 2018-19 school year!! Hope you all had a great summer and are ready to go for the 2018-19 school year and 2019 softball season! I am ready to be here to help all of you as I just got back on Saturday from a 21 day road trip in the western United States and getting to cheer on the Astros in Denver, Seattle, and San Francisco.

I’m writing to almost all of the 1250 plus head softball coaches in the state of Texas whose schools participate in the UIL, TAPPS, SPC, and other organizations. For those who don’t know me, I’ve been a head softball coach for 24 years, them becoming a principal, and eventually retiring four years ago. I’m currently back into coaching as a part time varsity assistant coach at St. Agnes Academy in Houston. I started the Texas Prep Softball website as a way to help our fellow coaches network with each other, find games, scrimmages, and tournaments, and post records, updates, and announcements. This started as an email list between coaches on the TGCA softball committee looking for games when I was the chairperson in 2002 and has grown to where I’ve actually charge a $10 fee per year to keep the site running. This is the 15th year that I’ve run the open dates email service which transformed into this website. The main goal is to help everyone find games, scrimmages, and tournaments. I keep adding and updating information to make the site even better for all of us.

You don’t have to be a member of the Texas Prep Softball website to still get emails from me during the year – the only parts that coaches subscribe to are the open dates, directories, and schedules pages. Everything else, especially news for student-athletes and coaches always stay on the free side of the site.

The first order of business for the 2018-19 school year that many coaches haven’t noticed is the change of the start date for 2019 scrimmages on the UIL calendar. Basically, the UIL gave the schools an extra day for scrimmages – Saturday, January 26, 2019. This gives us an extra scrimmage for the 2019 season, so you can really play 5 scrimmage dates instead of 5. Remember, the UIL doesn’t say how many actual scrimmage dates we get, just that we can only play 2 dates per CALENDAR week. So we now have 3 calendar weeks (January 26, January 28-February 2, and February 4-9). I noticed on the scrimmage open dates form that quite a few of you have figured that out already.

The next thing I need from everyone is to please check the coaches directory to make sure your information is correct. You can go to the following link (it’s really on the pay side, but if you click this link, you can get to it for free) COACHES DIRECTORY FREE LINK. When you get to the master list, you may scroll down (or click “CTRL + F” and type your school name) and check your information. If it is correct, type “YES” in column B for “COACH 2019 CONFIRM?” If not, you can correct it and then type “YES.” I am working on updating the conference and districts for the new UIL alignments for 2018-20, so you don’t have to mess with that if you don’t want to.

Upcoming dates:

October 21-22: UIL Legislative Council Meeting

January 10-11: Gulf Coast Softball Coaches Clinic in Houston (15th Annual) – Headline speakers: Patty Gasso (Oklahoma) and Lonni Alameda (Florida State)

January 14: TAPPS First Day of Practice

January 18: UIL First Day of Practice

January 21: TAPPS First Day of Scrimmages

January 26: UIL First day of scrimmages

January 28: TAPPS First Day of Games

February 11: UIL First day of games

If you have changed schools and haven’t let me know, please do so soon so I can update your information.

Thanks again and have a great start of the school year!
